REACH Initiative 03 · Cultural Cinema
Cultural cinema, documentary film, and visual heritage. Where the moving image becomes the custodian of living tradition.
REACH Talkies was launched in the institution's third decade — a recognition that the written word and the stage, essential as they are, cannot alone carry everything that living heritage contains. There are ways of moving, ways of making sound, ways of inhabiting space that only film can preserve with full fidelity.
The initiative curates and screens cultural cinema: documentary films on Indian performing arts and craft traditions, ethnographic recordings of communities whose practices are at risk, archival footage of performances and practitioners, and new commissioned documentary work. It also creates an institutional archive of recorded performances from the Virasat Festival across its thirty editions.
REACH Talkies is not a film festival. It is a sustained curatorial and documentary commitment — treating film as heritage infrastructure, not entertainment programming.

"What the stage performs tonight... The moving image is not decoration — it is infrastructure."
REACH Talkies · Programme philosophy
REACH Talkies commissions documentary work on living cultural traditions — particularly forms at risk of loss. If you are a filmmaker working in the heritage space, or an institution with a tradition that needs documenting, we want to hear from you.
We curate cultural cinema screenings within the Virasat Festival and as standalone events. If you have produced a documentary or heritage film that belongs in this conversation, propose it for the REACH Talkies programme.
